Different areas of the tongue are sensitive to different tastes. Riedel glasses are designed to direct a wine to the zone that highlights its best qualities. For example, the Riedel Burgundy/Pinot Noir glass directs wine to the tip of the tongue, highlighting the fruit while balancing the natural high acidity.
